  1. Confirm thermostat mode is COOL and set below room temperature.
  2. Check whether the filter is heavily blocked; replace only with the correct size.
  3. Make sure supply vents are open and return grilles are unobstructed.
  4. Look for visible ice. If present, turn cooling off and call.

Can a dirty filter stop cooling?

Yes, severely restricted airflow can reduce performance and freeze a coil. But replacing it will not fix every airflow or refrigeration problem.
